In Queensland, New Zealand, the state cabinet is looking at jailing parents for abandoning their kids to go gambling, drinking or shopping. This law would apply to parents who have children under the age of 12 who leave their children unattended for an “unreasonable amount of time”. Opponents of this law say that these tougher penalties will create even more trauma for the children involved … in a weird way, they’ve got a point. On the one hand, the parent could leave the children alone for 8 hours, on the other hand the police could take the parent away leaving the children parentless for days. Hmmm.
