Mitt

Children learn to follow step-by-step directives when they are participating in art projects.

Supplies:

• Yellow construction paper (or other color)
• Orange yarn (or other color)
• Assorted colors of paint
• Paper plates
• Tape
• Scissors
• Hole punch

Adult Preparation:

• Cut mitt shapes, 2 for each child.
• Tape one end of a piece of yarn to create a "needle".  Repeat for each child.
• Pour tempera paint onto paper plate(s).
• Punch 12 holes around the edge of the mitts

Activity with Children:

1. Place the two oven mitt shapes on top of each other so the holes line up.
2. Tape the plain end of the piece of yarn between the two oven mitt shapes, near the bottom left side.
3. Hold the "needle" end of the yarn in your hand, and thread the yarn down through the hole at the bottom of the oven mitt.
4. Bring the yarn up through the next hole.
5. Repeat until you have sewn the oven mitt together.  Tie a knot and cut off any extra yarn.
6. Dip your finger into paint and make prints on your oven mitt.
7. Repeat as many times a desired. Paint both sides.

Note: Try using a paper clip to hold the oven mitt shapes together while sewing the mitt pieces.
