My Pet Turtle

Allow children time to explore textures and materials included with this art project. Remember, it is the process that supports learning, not the product. Encourage children to make their project their own; all projects do not need to look alike or resemble the graphics.

Supplies: (many are included if you order the kit)

  • Green and yellow construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Paper bowl
  • Two wiggle eyes
  • Green yarn
  • Green paint
  • Shallow container or paper plate for paint
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Double stick tape
  • Paint brushes
  • Tape
  • Newspapers

Adult Preparation:

  • My Pet Turtle DirectionsDownload the instruction sheet from the Art Studio image to the right.
  • Draw and cut out a turtle body shape from green construction paper using the paper bowl as a pattern for the shell area.
  • Cut circle and triangle shapes of various sizes from yellow construction paper.
  • Cover the table with newspapers.

Activity with Children:

  • Stick or glue the wiggle eyes to the face of your turtle body shape.
  • Place the bowl upside down on the newspapers.
  • Paint the entire outside of the bowl green. Allow to dry.
Hint: Adult may use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process.
  • Turn the towl over so that the open side is up. Use a paintbrush to brush glue generously around the rim of the bowl.
  • Turn your bowl over again and center the rim over the circle area of your turtle body. Stick bowl and turtle body together. Allow glue to dry.
  • Glue on as many of the triangle and circle shapes as desired to the bowl to create your own shell pattern. What kind of pattern will you make?
  • Tape one end of the green yarn to the bottom of the bowl, near the turtle's head. Use the green yart to pull your turtle across the floor!

Reminder: Place any leftover materials in your Scrap Box to use for collage activities.
