Coconut Crab

 

Allow children time to explore textures andmaterials included with htis art project. Remember, it is the process that supports learning, not the product. Encourage children to make their project their own; all projects do not need to look alike or resemble the graphics.

Supplies: (many are included if you order the kit at www.MotherGooseTime.com)

  • 2 small paper plates
  • 2 wiggle eyes
  • 2 brass fasteners
  • construction paper for legs and claws
  • beans
  • stapler
  • scissors
  • hole punch
  • red tempera paint
  • newspapers
  • tape
  • paintbrushes
  • glue

Adult Preparation:

  • Coconut Crab Instructions
  • Download the instruction sheet from the Art Studio image to the right.
  • Cut out 10 strips of construction paper of various lengths for legs.
  • Cut out half-claw shapes.
  • Cover work surface with newspapers.
  • Give a handful of beans to each child.

Activity with Children:

  • Place paper plates bottom side up and paint red. Allow to dry.
  • Glue on one wiggle eye. Repeat for second wiggle eye.
  • Punch a hole in each piece of each claw. Punch a hole in each long leg strip.
  • Line up the claw and leg holes, and put a brass fastener in hole to attach. Repeat for second leg.
  • Tape the two long legs with claws to the unpainted side of a paper plate near the face.
  • Tape the remaining legs to the unpainted side of a paper plate.
  • Place the two paper plates together, painted sides facing out, and staple most of the way around the paper plates (leaving small opening for beans).
  • Fill the body with beans through the small opening.
  • Finish stapling to enclose beans.
